Building Department

This department is responsible for issuing all building and associated permits.  Plan review, various inspections and the issuance of certificates of occupancy or completion are among the duties of the office.

Chapter 541 of the Connecticut General Statutes sets forth the need, duties, requirements and conditions for the Building Department.  Chapter 541, part Ia of the CGS also states that all towns, cities and boroughs in the State of Connecticut shall use this code as their Building Code.

“In accordance with Connecticut General Statues Section 7-147d, and Chapter 268 of the Canton Town Code - No building or structure shall be erected or altered within an historic district until after an application for a certificate of appropriateness as to exterior architectural features has been submitted to the historic district commission and approved by said commission.”


Building Permits

The cost of a building permit is $30 minimum and $15 per $1,000 thereafter of estimated cost, effective September 1, 2024.  Please call the Building Department with any questions regarding permits or fees.

THE TOWN OF CANTON PROVIDES FOR INSPECTIONS IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER:

ALL INSPECTIONS SHALL BE ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS.
ALL INSPECTIONS SHALL BE ON THE “NEXT AVAILABLE” PER THE SCHEDULE
NO SPECIFIC TIME WILL BE PROVIDED AS YOU WILL RECEIVE A MORNING OR AFTERNOON “WINDOW”.
MORNING WINDOW:                     10:00am TO 12:00pm
AFTERNOON WINDOW                 2:00pm TO 5:00pm
FOOTINGS/FOUNDATIONS WILL RECEIVE FIRST, OR LAST, MORNING AND/OR AFTERNOON.
DUE TO STAFFING AND INSPECTION VARIABLES IN THE FIELD, THIS IS THE DEPARTMENT POLICY 1/23/2024.

All paperwork is required to be provided with your permits, such as Floor plans, Heat loss, RES checks, CT license, Proof of Insurance, and payment made.
For New Single-Family Homes, please include the square footage, number of beds, baths, basement and garage information.
All Pool permits are required to have a signed Sign Pool Agreement document which is located below.
All Auxiliary freestanding heating appliances, (Woodstove, Pellet Stove, Gas Stove, Fireplace Inserts) require a to scale drawing with dimensions of the room they are proposed to be located.
