5/12/2026 - Canton Community Health Fund’s Community Partner Canton Fire & EMS Dept continues to innovate to meet the public safety needs of our Town

Purchases of electric vehicles, including motor bikes, scooters and trucks (EVs), continue to trend up, as alternate transportation, especially in dense residential areas.

This has created a new kind of challenge for Canton’s first responders because there is a significant difference between how conventional vs. electric vehicle fires burn.

EVs burn extremely hot, an estimated 1,800+ degrees Fahrenheit. They also produce large amounts of noxious gases, smoke and flames, making them difficult to extinguish by standard fire suppression methods. Given that, they can present significant risks and damage to surrounding vehicles, structures, the environment, property and fire crews.

Over the years, EV fire suppression techniques have evolved. For example, today, it’s generally recommended that firefighters avoid flowing large quantities of water on EV fires. Instead, the Incident Commander’s containment plan involves minimizing exposure damage, while waiting for the ‘thermal runaway battery fire’ to self-extinguish. During this critical time, the EV battery cells may expel flammable clouds; its vapors may ignite under pressure; or even lead to an explosion.

To address these specific hazards and challenges, Canton Fire & EMS Department (Department), used their CCHF Community Partner Grant to purchase four EV fire blankets; one for each Engine and one for the Rescue truck.

While EV fire blankets can be deployed quickly by two firefighters, effectively containing the fire, specific technical skills training was still required to ensure crew, emergency scene and community safety.

Training, with firefighters in full personal protective equipment/gear, included:

-Scenario-based deployment, with simulated EV fires in residential garages, public parking lots; EV charging stations, etc.

-Post incident planning, including how to collaborate with towing companies to safely transport the damaged EV through high traffic corridors.

-Discussion about larger size vehicles (pick-ups or vans), requiring the use of multiple EV fire blankets.

-Instruction on proper cleaning, inspection, storage and disposal of expired blankets.

-Review of safety protocols related to EV hazards, and optimal strategic positioning of fire crews.

Holland: “EV blankets are a perfect complement to the Department’s Mission and Tag Line: to be prepared to save life, protect property and preserve the environment… At A Moment’s Notice.”
