Canton receives grant, plans to install electric vehicle charging stations

State Project No. 23-130
Federal Aid Project No. 1023(001)

Canton, Conn. – With a combination of Federal and Town funds, the Town of Canton is planning to install three electric vehicle charging stations, one each at the Cherry Brook Primary School parking lot, the Canton Public Works Department, and at the Mills Pond Pool House.

The Town was recently notified that it will receive up to $40,000 of Federal Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality (CMAQ) program funds from the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation to help offset eligible costs associated with electric vehicle charging station installation. Canton was one of 10 towns awarded the grant.  As noted above, three separate charging stations will be installed at town facilities, including the Cherry Brook School on Barbourtown Road, the Public Works Department building on River Road, and the Mills Pond Pool House facility on East Hill Road.

The total cost of installation of the electric vehicle charging stations is anticipated to be $50,000, including equipment, and the Town will provide 20% of the total cost with local funds.

Current schedules for the project anticipate design to be completed in February, 2025, and construction is expected to be completed in Summer 2025.

It is the Town's and the State's policy to keep persons informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns to assist in the purchase.

Project information is available for review by contacting Mr. Glenn Cusano, Project Administrator, at gcusano@townofcantonct.org , or by calling the Public Works office at (860) 693-7855, M-F between 7:00am and 3:30pm.  Anyone interested in submitting a comment or requesting additional information on this project should contact, Mr. Cusano at their earliest convenience.  Comments regarding the electric vehicle charging station project can be made up until October 4th 2024.
