These twin buildings have been home to a wide variety of commercial uses over the years. They occupy the site of the massive wooden Tiffany Block which burned after the Civil War. A prescient fear of fire caused the Collins Company to install metal shutters on the rear office building windows to guard against conflagrations. The shutter hardware can still be seen alongside the windows. The fire occurred in winter and hose had to be run through the office building lest it freeze. The businesses here have sold hardware, clothing, books, artwork, and hobby materials. More recently there have been restaurants and a store offering jewelry and fine gifts.
