11/7/2013 - *Tom Condon to Speak at Canton Library - Nov 7

Join us for a Special Event to Celebrate Canton Public Library's 100th Birthday

Thursday Nov 7, 2013 at 730pm

Mention the recent $387,000 state grant for streetscape improvements in Collinsville to Tom Condon, Hartford Courant’s Deputy Editor, and one can hear the gears whirring in his head as he considers the promise of kickstarting economic growth through an initial public investment.
As part of the many events planned for the Canton Public Library’s 100th Anniversary Celebration, Condon will be speaking about the potential of the upcoming improvements as an economic generator, and of the possibility of development of key projects in Canton/Collinsville in the context of the economics of the wider Farmington Valley and Connecticut overall.

Condon’s talk will take place on Thursday, November 7, at 7:30 PM in the Community Center’s Room F, adjacent to the library. One of the projects that will be discussed is the future use of the former Collins Company mill complex, which has come close to development several times in the past ten or 12 years although no deal has come to fruition. Originally reopened for small businesses by former owner Tom Perry, it was meant to be an incubator for start-ups and other small entrepreneurial ventures since the facilities were often in marginal condition and the rents were low. A significant number of businesses have succeeded, expanded, and moved to more substantial quarters over the years, after their beginnings at the “Ax Factory.” After many years in its current state, however, the present owner has accumulated both commercial and residential design plans for redevelopment, all of which would require a major financial investment. It may be that the state grant is the outside catalyst for a new, multi-use Ax Factory.

There is no cost for this program, although the library requests that patrons register by phone or email in order that they may set up seating. Canton Public Library is at 40 Dyer Avenue, Canton. For more information, please call (860) 693-5800, email
