Title: Assistant River Stewards

Where: The Upper Wild and Scenic Farmington River (Hartland to Canton, CT)

Job Description:
The Farmington River Coordinating Committee (FRCC) is seeking to fill several Assistant River Steward positions to help protect the beautiful Upper Wild and Scenic Farmington River. This is a terrific opportunity to be outdoors, make a difference in the community, and for college students to gain experience in related fields of study while getting paid. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated individuals who can instill an appreciation for the river in others, help reduce litter, work on various river related projects, be a source of information to river users, and create safe and enjoyable experiences on the water.
This job is for the summer of 2022, June 4th through August 21st. Assistant stewards will be scheduled to work two - 8 hour days (from 9-5) for a total of 16 hours per week on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday when the river is most busy. There is some flexibility when scheduling between the three days, and accommodations can be made if someone has another part time job. There also may be the possibility of additional hours if interested. June 4th will be a mandatory training day at the start of the season.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

· Interact with river users to educate, and be a source of information
· Teach people about ‘No Glass, No Trash’ and ‘Carry Out what you Carry In’
· Be a role model for proper etiquette on the river
· Paddle the river with provided inflatable kayaks
· Help promote the Junior River Ranger Program
· Report problems to the proper authorities or river steward
· Visit local businesses, keep them supplied with flyers and maps
· Staff informational booths at the river and local events
· Assist with other FRCC projects such as invasive plant removal and administering surveys
· Create engaging videos or in-person educational talks related to the outdoors
· Post frequently to social media
· Submit bi-weekly reports
· Occasional trash pick-up

Requirements for this position:

- Be at least 16 years of age with own transportation
- Must have internet, cell phone and email access
- Ability to work with people from different backgrounds and be a good teacher
- Great communication skills are required
- Majoring in conservation or similar outdoor field is preferred
- Skilled in kayaking, canoeing or fishing is a plus
- Be able to work both independently and also with a team
- Comfortable working outdoors in different conditions
- A fair amount of walking and some lifting may be required
