BUDGET REFERENDUM ~ ABSENTEE BALLOT INFORMATION

10/27/2023 - 10/25/2023

At its regular meeting on October 25, 2023, the Canton Board of Selectmen took the following actions:

- BikeWalkCantonCT, New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) and Pinnacle Trail Design & Construction presented their proposal for a Bike Pump and Bike Skills playground at 55 Lawton Road.  Construction and maintenance of the playground would be paid by NEMBA. After much discussion, the Board authorized the First Selectmen to submit the associated land use applications for the playground.

- The Board held a public hearing regarding the Business Development Tax Incentive Program. Following the hearing, the Board tabled its review of the program because too few comments had been received from the public. The First Selectman will reach out of the Economic Development Agency for further outreach about this program.

- The Selectmen authorized the Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department to sell both Engine 6 and Rescue 5 fire vehicles. Engine 6 is in dire need of repair, the manufacturer ceased operations ten years ago and parts are unavailable. A replacement for Rescue 9 is on its way.

- The Board accepted the following grants and donations:
$7,928.10 from Northwest Connecticut Community Bank for a standardized fitness program for Firefighters and EMTs;
$2,500 from the Collinsville Fire Company for the Community Service Dog Program;
$2,500 from the Canton Volunteer Fire Company for the Community Service Dog Program;
$3,500 from the Canton Food Bank for General Assistance for Canton residents;
$24,719.88 from the Department of Transportation for Distracted Driving High Visibility Enforcement; and
A painting of Main Street Collinsville by Rudy Ravasio, a well-known watercolor artist whose work can be seen throughout the state.  The donation came from Roxanne Priscina, the artist's daughter.
