1. What is the Mill Rate?

Through June 30, 2007 it is 28.91

2. When are taxes due?

Real Estate and Personal Property bills in excess of $100 are due in two equal installments on July 1st and January 1st. Amounts due under $100 are due in one installment.

Motor Vehicle bills are all due on July 1st. (See Supplemental Motor Vehicle information for bills that come due on January 1st.)

3. I moved to another Town in Connecticut. What town do I pay?

You will pay the town that you lived in on October 1st. If you moved prior to October 1st you will need to provide the assessors office documentation showing when you moved. If you purchased a home in another town; a copy of the assessor’s card from that town should be faxed to the assessor, 860-693-7840. If you are renting; a copy of your lease should be given to the assessor’s office and you will need to change your address with the motor vehicle department, the town is unable to change your address and your tax town code with the motor vehicle department.

5. I moved out of state. How do I get my bill pro-rated?

Please fax (860-693-7840) or mail a copy of your registration from your new state for each car billed to the Assessor’s office. After this information is received the assessor will pro-rate your assessment and give the tax office an adjustment. A revised bill will be sent to you showing the new amount due.

6. I sold my car. What do I ?

If you sold your vehicle and took the license plate and put it on a replacement vehicle, the July bill is due. You will be receiving a Supplemental Motor Vehicle bill for the replacement car which will come due the following January. On that bill, you will see a credit for the car you are being billed for in July.

If you did not replace this car, you need to send the assessor’s office a copy of the license plate receipt that you received from the Department of Motor Vehicles. This document may reduce your assessment and in turn reduce your taxes due.

7. What is a Supplemental Motor Vehicle (SMV) Tax?

A SMV bill will be issued for vehicles that were registered between October 2nd and July 31st. These bills come due on January 1st. If you used a license plate from a car that you were billed for on the July billing, you will see a credit on your SMV bill for the period of time that you did not own that car.

8. What is the last day that I can pay my taxes without paying interest charges?

The July billing can be paid up and including August 1st and the January billing can be paid up and including February 1st.

9. What is the interest rate charged on my tax bill?

Interest is charged at a rate of 1 ½% per month from the due date (July 1 and January 1). To calculate your interest due, you would take the tax outstanding and multiply it by 1 ½% for each month that you are behind. (Example: If you are paying your bill in August, you would multiply the tax by 3%, if September, you would multiply the tax by 4 ½%)

10. I never received a bill, why do I have to pay interest?

The state statute reads: “failure to receive a bill does not invalidate the tax due”. If you haven’t received a bill and you believe you should have, please call the tax office at 860-693-7843 to verify a bill was issued. You can also e-mail us your questions at taxcollector@townofcantonct.org and we would be happy to get back to you.
