The Town Ordinances of Canton are in the process of being codified/organized to enable simple searches within each document.  This project, approved by the Board of Selectmen in February 2007, is a lengthy one and is being conducted by General Code of Rochester, New York.  Anticipated completion will be in the Fall of 2008.  In the meantime, Ordinances are on file for public inspection at the Town Hall and Library.

The Charter is viewable by clicking here.  It is currently being reviewed by the newly organized Charter Revision Commission.  Members of the commission are:

The Board of Selectmen adopted the following Resolution on January 23, 2008:

WHEREAS, the Board of Selectmen of the Town of Canton, pursuant to Chapter 99 of the Connecticut General Statutes, resolved, on January 2, 2008, to establish a Charter Revision Commission; and NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED by the Board of Selectmen that the Charter Revision Commission shall consider the following recommendations for revisions to the Charter:

1. Examine the Charter for the purpose of determining what changes should be made to insure that the Charter establishes a governing system which effectively, efficiently and fairly meets the needs of the Town;

2. Study the Structure of Canton’s Town government;

3. Consider alternate forms of government;

4. Evaluate changes to the government structure to improve efficiency, access to information and public participation in activities of Boards and Commissions;

5. Methods to maximize fiscal management of Town funds and management of Town resources; and

6. Provide for administration of Town government consistent with Connecticut General Statutes.

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED, that the foregoing recommendations shall not be deemed to be an exclusive list; rather, the Charter Revision Commission may also consider other changes to the Charter, other items for inclusion in a proposed revised Charter, and such other items as it shall deem desirable or necessary.

IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Charter Revision Commission shall, in its report, comment on each of the recommendations listed above, as well as any other changes or items it deems appropriate, and shall submit its draft report to the Board of Selectmen no later that May 23, 2009.
