The last day to make your July 2011 tax payment is August 1, 2011 without incurring interest.

The last day to make your January 2012 tax payment is February 1, 2012 without incurring interest.

If you have a question concerning what you have been billed for, please call or come into the office prior to July 28, 2011 to receive any adjustments you are entitled to.  Any changes made after this date will be issued after August 1st - which is the last day to pay the taxes without interest.

TAX DUE DATES:

Real Estate: July 1st and January 1st,  You have up to and including August 1st and February 1st to pay without penalty (if your bill is under $100, it is paid in only one installment in July)  
Motor Vehicle: July 1st, You have up to and including August 1st to pay without a penalty
Motor Vehicle Supplement: January 1st, You have up to and including February 1st to pay without penalty.  Bills will be mailed out on December 29, 2011.  If you are expecting a bill and have not received one please contact the tax office.
Personal Property: July 1st and January 1st,  You have up to and including August 1st and February 1st to pay without penalty (if your bill is under $100, it is paid in only one installment in July)

CURRENT MILL RATE THROUGH JUNE 30, 2012:  26.28  (click here for a history of mill rates)

The mill rate has been set for the July 1st billing at 26.28.  If you would like to calculate what your real estate taxes will be for the 7/1/11 to 6/30/12 time period you will need to multiply your new assessment by .02628.  This is your annual tax amount.  You can look up your assessment on the Assessor's website by clicking here.

The referendum to vote on the budget was held on June 8, 2011, a little later than past years.  Bills were put in the mail on Tuesday, June 28, 2011.  If you do not receive your bill by July 4th please call the tax office at 860-693-7843.

The 2011-2012 mill rate is 26.28 mills.  The 2011-2012 budget for the Town of Canton estimates that $3,818,321 will be received from the State of Connecticut for various state financed programs.  Without this assistance your 2011-2012 property tax mill rate would be 29.72 mills. 

The State of Connecticut General Statutes, Section 12-130 states: "failure to receive a bill does not invalidate the tax"

CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS  - Credit card payments can now be made online and at the tax office window.   The company that is handling the credit card transactions, Point and Pay, charges a convenience fee for using this service.  The fee is between 2 1/2% to 3% determined by the amount being charged.  No part of this convenience fee is paid to the Town of Canton. This fee will be charged to your credit card at the same time as your tax payment and will show on your credit card statement as a separate item.  You will be advised of the fee prior to processing your payment and you will need to accept the fee prior to authorizing the charge.  Please click here to make your payment online.

 DO YOU OWE DELINQUENT MOTOR VEHICLE TAXES?

If you need a motor vehicle release you will need to pay your taxes in full by cash or money order.  If you would like to take care of this through the mail, please send your bills - money order or bank check - self addressed stamped envelope - and a note asking for a motor vehicle release to be sent back to you.  If it is necessary to pay the bill(s) with a personal check, you will need to wait 10 business days before we can send you a motor vehicle release.
