Winter plowing
Winter plowing and applying treated road salt are done by lane miles. There are currently 70 miles or town roads, so the town covers 140 miles during a storm (70 X 2 = 140 Miles). For each 10 miles of Town Roads, during a winter storm for each truck, this same 10 miles becomes 20 miles. During clean up of a storm four (4) passes on each road are needed, which increases each 10 miles of road to 40 miles.

Routes : Trucks are divided into seven (7) major routes each consisting of approximately ten (10) miles of road. Additionally, the Highway Department plows school drives and parking lots, Town Hall parking lot, Library/Community Center parking lot, Police Department parking lot, three (3) firehouse parking lots and the transfer station. The average time it takes to complete a single route one time is about 2 ½ hours. This time will increase with the intensity of a storm. The Director of Public Works is contact with the Superintendent of Schools at approximately 4:30 AM to discuss road conditions. On mornings when a possible icing condition exists, two (2) trucks are dispatched prior to busses leaving the bus station to apply treated salt and plow off any snow/ice accumulation.
