IT'S BRUSH FIRE SEASON!!

The Office of the Fire Marshal would like to remind residents to use caution during the brush fire season.  When the forest fire danger is High, Very High or Extreme NO OPEN BURNING PERMITS are valid.  Campfires are also not allowed during high levels of forest fire danger.  The forest fire danger level may be obtained by visiting the State of CT Department of Environmental Protection website at http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2222&q=320740&depNav_GID=1631.  Residents who have an open burning permit shall continue to check with the Canton Police Dispatcher at 693-0221 prior to burning to obtain permission. 

Residents are also urged to use caution while discarding smoking material, charcoal or fireplace ashes.  Ensure that any discarded material is in a metal container and is thoroughly doused with water. 


Some of the duties of the Office of the Fire Marshal: 

  • Code compliance inspections in accordance with CT General Statutes Chapter 541 Section 29-305
  • Site visits during construction
  • Investigations of all fires that occur within the Town of Canton
  • Plan review for new construction as well as renovations or modifications within existing structures
  • Hazardous materials inspections, including transport vehicles registered in the Town of Canton
  • Public fire education
  • Continuing education: The Fire Marshal and Deputy Fire Marshal are required to take a minimum of 90 hours of continuing education every 3 years
