FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Mapping (FIRM)

The Zoning Commission has adopted revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) with an effective date of September 26, 2008 prepared by the US Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (ConnDEP). The FEMA FIRM with Map Revised March 18, 1991 becomes obsolete on the effective date of the latest mapping.

The mapping is available from the FEMA Mapping Service Center at www.fema.gov in a number of digital formats either for viewing on-line, to download, or to obtain as a CD. FEMA has established a nominal charge for this service.

Canton is community number 090135 located in Hartford County #09003C with panels #0167, 0168, 0169, 0302, 0304, 0306, 0307, 0308, 0309, 0315, 0316, 0317, 0326, and 0328 published. There has been a vertical datum change adopted in the September 26, 2008 FIRM and Flood Insurance Study (FIS). It is the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 1988). The March 18, 1991 FIRM utilized the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 1929). In Canton, NAVD 1988 is lower than NDVD 1929 by 0.80 feet.

The horizontal datum of the September 26, 2008 FIRM is the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83).

The FIS consists of a 7 Volume set for Hartford County with an effective date of September 26, 2008. Figures, Tables, Exhibits, etc. are indexed by waterway name and not by Town. Information shown on the FIS is referenced to NAVD 88.

A copy of the FIS with effective date September 26, 2008 is available at the office for reference. It is also available on the FEMA website as FIS Study Number 09003CV001A.

The Town of Canton is a Map Repository for FEMA flood information as published by the FIRM and FIS for the Town of Canton. The Town of Canton does not distribute or offer the mapping for sale. Please contact FEMA for distribution or sales of the FIRM or FIS for the Town of Canton.
