Senior Services Provided by the Town of Canton and Others

  • Counseling. Individual counseling on: finances, housing, retirement, personal and family problems, support home services, social security, and related areas. Information on the availability of local, state, and federal programs and resources. For assistance, call the Avon Social Services Department, 409-4346.

  • Dial-a-Ride. Dial-a-Ride service runs Monday-Friday from 9:30am-3:30pm. The bus is wheelchair accessible and has a low entry step. Reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance and can be made by calling 693-6876 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Notify the dispatcher if you need the wheelchair lift. One-way tickets are $0.50 and are available at the Town Clerk's Office Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or at the 21 Dowd, Maple Glen administrative offices, or the Canton Senior Center.

  • Energy Assistance. Canton Emergency Fuel Bank is a program designed to assist families in meeting their fuel needs when all other sources of aid have been exhausted. For more information, contact Alan Rosenberg, Director of Special Services at 409-4346.

  • Food Bank. The Canton Food Bank is available to help supplement a families food needs regardless of income. The food bank is located at the Trinity Episcopal Church on River Road in Collinsville and is open on Tuesdays from 9:30am to 11:30am. Donations of non-perishable food items and money are welcome. Arrangements must be made for donating perishable items. For more information, contact Peg Pinton @ 693-2024 or Gretchen Stein @ 693-6105.

  • Health Services. The following services are available through Famrington Valley Visiting Nurses and Community Services:  certified home health aides, clinics for blood pressure and foot care, dietitian, IV therapy, medical social worker, physical therapy, skilled nursing, speech therapy. Further information on these and other health services is available through Farmington Valley VNA at 651-3539.

  • Income Tax Preparation Assistance. This service is designed to assist local senior citizens with questions or problems on their income tax returns. It is offered with the assistance of local volunteers in cooperation with AARP and the Internal Revenue Service, during the months preceding the tax deadline. Further information is available by contacting Mary Fletcher at 693-5811.

  • Meals on Wheels. Meals-on-wheels service is available to seniors, the handicapped and those in need of meals on a temporary basis following illness, surgery, personal injury, hospitalization or rehabilitation. This service is provided for Canton residents by McLean's  Community Service. For more information on receiving meals-on-wheels or on volunteering as a driver for the program, call Ann Erickson at 658-3700.

  • Medicare Claims Service. This service is available through the Avon Social Services Department on an appointment basis. It is designed to assist local resident in the processing of Medicare Part B claims.

  • Tax and Renters' Relief Circuit Breaker Program. This is a state grant program for persons 65 and over to assist in the payment of rent and utility bills and to provide tax relief. Further information on income limits and eligibility is available through the Town Assessor's office, 693-7842.

  • Senior Scribe.  The Canton Commission on Aging publishes the Senior Scribe, a newsletter filled with information on services, special events and other items of interest to seniors, five times a year.

  • Senior Info Wall.  The Senior Info Wall is a collection of posters, brochures and booklets containing valuable information about issues and programs affecting seniors.  It is located in the Canton Library and Community Center.

  • Vial-of-Life.  This is a program which provides vital medical information in a home emergency. A plastic vial containing an information sheet is stored in the refrigerator, and a decal on the outside of the appliance informs emergency personnel that vital information is available. Further information is available through the Senior Services Department, 693-5811.

  • Regular on-going activities also includes: Out of town medical transportation, Speakers Bureau, Book Clubs, Bereavement Group, Senior Fitness Program, Haelthy Walker Program, Hearing Clinic, Skin Screening Clinic, Current Evenets Group, Cooking Classes, Computer class, Potluck Meals, and Movies of the Month!  All are welcome, please call for details.
