Board of SelectmenThe Board of Selectmen, which consists of the First Selectmen and four (4) other Selectmen, is elected for a two (2) year term during every odd year. The next municipal election will occur in November 2009. In accordance with the Town Charter, no more than three (3) members - exclusive of the First Selectman - shall be of the same political party. The Board elects from within its own membership a Deputy First Selectman who shall serve as acting First Selectman during the absence of the First Selectman. The current Deputy First Selectman is David W. Gilchrist. The Board of Selectmen meetings every first and third Wednesday of the month at 7:00PM. Meetings are typically held in Conference Room B of the Canton Community Center located at 40 Dyer Avenue. The General Powers of the Board of Selectmen as identified within Article 6 of the Town Charter include the following: - Shall have all the powers, duties, and responsibilities conferred upon it bu the Town Charter and by Connecticut General Statute;
Shall be responsible for having the Chief Administrative Officer carry out all acts, policies, resolutions and ordinances of the Town; Set policy and authorize action on all matters concerning the administration of the Town, except the Board of Education; The Board shall not have policy making powers related to land use boards and commissions; Shall be responsible for conducting a continuous review of the current and projected administrative, governmental and fiscal needs of the Town; Shall review and make adjustments to the Chief Administrative Officer's Preliminary Budget and cause to have a final proposed budget forwarded to the Board of Finance no later than the second Monday of March; May - upon request of the Chief Administrative Officer - redistribute or transfer in any fiscal year within or between departments unexpended balances in excess of $1,000 upon majority vote; Shall hire and may discharge a full time Chief Administrative Officer. A minimum of four (4) votes is required to hire or discharge; Shall appoint Town Counsel; Upon affirmative vote of three (3) members, may accept any public improvement or public road or open space or similar real estate interest; May accept gifts on behalf of the Town upon affirmative vote of three (3) members; Shall be responsible for disposition of Town property under its respective jurisdiction having a fair market value up to $25,000; and Shall fill unexpired terms for all vacancies that may exist on all appointed boards, commissions, agencies, committees and authorities.

Board of Selectmen Regular Meeting DatesThe Canton Board of Selectmen voted to adopt its Regular Meeting Schedule for Calendar Year 2007. In doing so, it chose to alter the regular meeting date from the 1st and 3rd Thursdays to the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. The meeting dates for 2007 are provided below.
Meetings are scheduled for the following dates: January 3, 17 July 18 February 7, 21 August 1, 15 March 7, 22 September 5, 19 April 4, 18 October 3, 17 May 2, 16 November 7, 14 June 6, 20 December 5, 19 Meetings typically begin at 7:00PM and are held at the Canton Community Center, 40 Dyer Avenue, Canton.
